The story of a minor 'academic' war in Wales, mercifully bloodless, and not strictly academic, as opposing parties were mostly motivated by religious, political, and nationalistic prejudices. It stems from the oldest university degree-conferring College in Wales being refused membership to the federal University founded in 1893.
It gives a personal account of the life and death struggle for survival from 1945 to 1960, and how St David's College, generously helped by University College, Cardiff, won Treasury grant-aid, and how this soon led to full constituent membership of the University.
The author was a graduate of St David's, and Principal, 1953-75, and trusts that his personal involvement will add colour without distorting the record.
