Ganwyd ym 1946 yn Y Felinheli, Gwynedd. Bu'n actio'n rhan-amser i'r BBC ers yn 13 oed nes iddo droi'n llawn-amser broffesiynnol ym 1970. Cafodd brif rannau yn Deg i Dragwyddoldeb (1972) a Pen ei Dennyn (1974) a chymryd rhan mewn dwsinau o raglenni radio i ysgolion cyn dechrau ar yrfa o bron i 40 mlynedd fel Meic Pierce ym Mhobol y Cwm ym 1975. Gyda Dewi Pws, William Thomas a Nia Caron cymrodd ran flaenllaw yn Torri Gwynt a Rhagor o Wynt i HTV gan ysgrifennu nifer o benodau. Bu'n gynhyrchydd ar Y Cleciwr ac yn olygydd sgriptiau ar Pelydr-X a Clex i HTV. Bu hefyd yn darllen y newyddion ar Radio Cymru am rai blynyddoedd. Hefyd, Gareth oedd llais Sam Tân a'i holl ffrindiau yn yr 80au i S4C. Yn briod am yr ail waith, mae'n dad i dri o fechgyn ac yn lys-dad i ddau o blant , yn ogystal a bod yn daid i ddwy wyres. Mae'n byw yng Nghaerdydd.
